WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY’S INHUMANE DOG EXPERIMENTS: QUEENIE’S STORY
PCRM obtained shelter and veterinary records through the Michigan Freedom of Information Act for Queenie, a Dalmatian mix who was used in one of the experiments conducted by Donal O’Leary, Ph.D. These records show that Queenie suffered immensely at the hands of O’Leary and his staff at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Queenie was found stray in early 2009 by residents of Gratiot County, Mich., who kept her for weeks before surrendering her to the Gratiot County Animal Shelter on June 15, 2009. After 10 days at the shelter, she was transferred to R&R Research, a Class B “random source” animal dealer.
Queenie was sold to Wayne State University, and veterinary staff noted that she was “curious, gentle, [and] friendly” when she arrived on Sept. 16, 2009. Lab personnel renamed her “Lafayette,” and she was assigned to the experiment “Integrative Cardiovascular Control During Exercise in Hypertension”. She began treadmill training on Sept. 23, when she was noted to be “distressed”.

ADDICTED TO ANIMAL CRUELTY - EXTENDED VERSION - ANIMAL TESTING AND THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY

In one study, they strapped dogs down and cut their throats open to permanently install a tube that forced the dogs to smoke cigarettes. This filled their bodies with tar that caused some of the dogs to develop cancer, bronchitis, and pulmonary emphysema.

In other “research,” they painted mice with highly concentrated cigarette tar and injected it under their skin. They even forced tar into the respiratory tracts of little hamsters to see if intense exposure to tar would cause cancer. Some of the animals grew tumors that the researchers said were “spontaneous” and “were in no way due to the effect of the injected material.” So, these animals grew tumors, just not the “right kind of tumors.” With these results, they said that people couldn’t get cancer from smoking.

In the late 60’s, they were running smoking experiments with rabbits and mice where the animals were developing emphysema. Hundreds of rabbits and mice died. Any normal company would have had a massive recall. But what did they do? The FIRED the scientists, BURIED the findings and SHUT DOWN the study. Then they continued to deny smoking caused any health problems for DECADES.

Internal industry documents from just ten years ago show that one major tobacco company is quote, “committed to using animals in scientific research only when necessary.”

Torturing and discarding countless animals just to make cigarettes? Really?

Is smoking worth it?

UNILEVER & ANIMAL TESTING - PRODUCTS TO AVOID
Unilever states it is committed to the elimination of animal testing, and that in those countries where it is a legal requirement it tries to convince the relevant authorities to change the law. Some activists argue that this is little more than an effort to gain good publicity and Unilever continue to use animal experimentation such as the LD50 poisoning test.
